The Lorado Taft Field Campus is a typical campus. The area is on the same property of the Eagle's Nest Art Colony (1898-1942) and even uses some of the original buildings. Focusing on environmental education, the grounds provide meeting rooms for conferences, a dining hall and dormitories that sleep up to 165 people. The campus is also used for environmental education for elementary and middle-school students.

The Kishwaukee College of Malta offers certificates, degrees and customized training for students, as well as continuing education for adults. Each year, approximately 10,000 students take courses through the college. Visitors are welcome to tour the campus with or without a guide.

The Campbell Center's opened its doors in 1853 and has been in continuous use to educate students. It started out as a seminary and today teaches courses on historic preservation and care of artifacts. The campus was adopted to the National Register of Historic Place in 1980.

The Northern Illinois University has been teaching students since 1895. Today approximately 25,000 people attend the school, which is located in in DeKalb, 65 mi (104 km) west of Chicago. This institute offers undergraduate degrees, graduate programs and doctorates.
