The Ellwood House is a Victorian-styled mansion built in 1879 by barbed-wire millionaire Isaac L. Ellwood. A three-story spiral staircase is a focal point in the home. Built for Congressman Washburne in 1843, the Elihu B. Washburne House is open to the public every Friday from 10am to 4pm, May to October or by appointment. The house was built in Greek Revival style, with large pillars framing the front entrance. Reddick Mansion Reddick Mansion is one of Ottawa's premiere tourist draws. The home was constructed prior to the Civil War and is thought to be one of the most expensive homes ever built in Midwestern United State. It was also a stop for the Underground Railroad. The Gruler House was built in 1857 and was inhabited by its famous residents in 1893 until the late 1970s. The Grulers were best known for their improvements in the dairy industry, with regards to testing, cleanliness and efficiency. The house in now cared for by the Gruler Heritage Association. It took two years, from 1874-76, for the Hegeler Carus Mansion to be constructed as the home of Edward C. Hegeler, a prestigious resident of La Salle. In 1887, Hegeler and his son-in-law Paul Carus started one of the United State's first academic publishing companies, operating from the house. It was added National Register of Historic places in 1995. Year-round tours of the house take place at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Dillon Home Museum The Dillon Home once belonged to the owners of Northwestern Steel and Wire and was built in an Italianate fashion in 1857. Today it contains antiques and local artifacts. Visitors in Freeport can visit one of the city's oldest homes, the Taylor Home from 1857, as well as many exhibits at the Stephenson County Historical Society Museum. The grounds of the home include several areas of interest, including a schoolhouse, a farm museum, a log cabin and an arboretum. The Farnsworth House isn't famous because of its age, but because of its unique design. The home is built of steel beams and glass walls, giving it the appearance of a square, human-sized fish bowl. It was built in 1951 by well-know architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Dr. Edith Farnsworth. From April to November, people can tour the house, which is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 3pm.
