Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area acts as a refuge for many endangered birds, grasses and flowers. The area consists of marshy land because the early settlers drained the lake that once covered the land to clear more space for crops. Activities at Goose Lake Prairie include hiking on the numerous trails, picnicking or learning at the visitor center.
The William G. Stratton State Park was created to help boaters and anglers access the Illinois River. There are four public boat launches and plenty of green space and table for picnicking, which are ideal facilities for an afternoon outside. The park is bordered by the Illinois and Michigan Canal State Trail, allowing for bikers and hikers get on to it. Jet skiing, fishing and water skiing are other activities permitted here.
Overlooking the Illinois and Michigan Canal, Gebhard Woods State Park provides canoeists, anglers, hikers, bikers and nature lovers with a place to go. There are numerous picnic spots and a primitive campground which add to the park's charm. While gas-powered boats are prohibited on the canal, small paddle boats or those with electric motors are permitted on the water.
