It took two years, from 1874-76, for the Hegeler Carus Mansion to be constructed as the home of Edward C. Hegeler, a prestigious resident of La Salle. In 1887, Hegeler and his son-in-law Paul Carus started one of the United State's first academic publishing companies, operating from the house. It was added National Register of Historic places in 1995. Year-round tours of the house take place at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, Wednesday through Sunday.
