Nature lovers can enjoy the Nachusa Grasslands, which is home to numerous species of birds, grasslands, marshes and fields of native vegetation. Hiking, birdwatching and picnicking are welcomed at the park, as long as guests leave the area as they found it. Birdwatching tours, among others, are held here periodically throughout the year by volunteers and local events to raise awareness are another draw to the grasslands. The Franklin Creek State Natural Area boasts many natural and recreational areas for its guests to enjoy. The park takes up 644 acres (260 ha) and includes several natural springs, forested areas, picnicking facilities, hiking and horseback riding trails, fishing and limited hunting access and cross country skiing areas.
