Byron Museums
The Byron Museum of History is found in the center of the town. Many artifacts and displays from the local history, including exhibits on the Rock River, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War and much more. Beside the museum stands the Lucius Read House, which was built in 1843. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 8:30am to 3:30pm or by appointment.
The Natural History Museum is the heart of the Jarrett Prairie Center. If features displays of prairie, wetland and woodland areas and explains how these environments were when the first people arrived in the area. Children can pretend to be animals as they climb through various animal dens and other habitats. There are also displays of aquariums and bee hives for visitors. Tours of the museum can be arranged.
Replicating a pioneer farm, the Heritage Farm Museum was opened in 2001. The farm was once owned by Charles Wilbur, who settled in the area in 1846. A copy of his farm house has been constructed and is furnished with items used during the mid-1800s. Other areas for visitors to see include a barn, a milk house, an outhouse and a garden. This museum can be accessed by people with disabilities and is found on the Byron Forest Preserve.
